Environmental Club
Under the guidance of Fourth Grade teacher Mike McDonnell, OGSEF helped implement the new Environmental Club. The club has assumed responsibility for restoring one and a half acres of degraded woodlands on school property.
Working with Liberty Prairie Restorations and their restoration ecologist, Al Moody, the program is designed to be scientifically based, accurate, and enriching for all involved. Through the process, the participating students become proficient in the basic fundamentals of ecological restoration and the native ecosystems of this area, including the identification of native plants and animals, as well as the exotic and weedy plants that would be removed.
The Environmental Club promotes active learning, in which all of the students, parents, faculty and local residents involved can establish a sense of pride and ownership for the finished product.
