Drama Workshop
The Fall 2009 Performance by Oak Grove's Drama Club was funded by a grant
from the Oak Grove School Education Foundation. The funds provided
scripts for all thirty 4th-5th grader actors as well as to four junior high
assistant directors (two 6th graders and two 8th graders). In addition,
this grant was used to purchase costumes, props, and show t-shirts for all
the participants.
Since Miss Driver started Drama Club in 2007, the club has grown in
popularity so that it now has a waiting list of students to join. In
order to keep costs low, the students have always written their own script
for the fall play since using a published script means paying for
royalties and purchasing enough copies of the script for everyone
involved. The OGSEF grant provided a unique opportunity for 4th-5th grade
students to create characters from an existing script! They felt like
"real actors" getting their official scripts and highlighting their lines.
These scripts will be momentoes for them for years to come!
The script, "Who Me? Yes, You!" was a series of short plays about social
responsibility all tied together by the theme that each play was a
commercial being filmed by a TV Crew. This format enabled all the junior
high assistant directors to take at least two scenes to direct. All four
assistant directors demonstrated an amazing amount of leadership and
talent when working with the younger students, and the 4th-5th graders had
fun learning from and getting to know an older kid!
